Chretien Herben

Chretien Herben

Chrétien Herben holds a degree in Physics from the University of Twente and earned his PhD in Optoelectronics with distinction (cum laude) from Delft University of Technology. Based on his doctoral research, he founded ThreeFive Photonics, a high-tech start-up focused on developing photonic integrated circuits for telecommunications applications. Following the successful sale of the company, Chrétien transitioned into innovation management, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship, with a focus on High Tech Systems & Materials, Life Sciences, and Cleantech.

In 2008, Chrétien founded LifeSciences@Work, the national accelerator for Life Sciences ventures in the Netherlands. A key component of LifeSciences@Work is the Venture Challenge, a premier business coaching program for high-potential academic biotech and medtech startups. Both the Venture Challenge and LifeSciences@Work have gained international recognition, including the European Enterprise Promotion Award in 2022 and a ranking as one of Europe's Leading Start-Up Hubs by the Financial Times in 2024.

As a mentor, Chrétien has coached hundreds of start-ups through programs such as New Venture, Venture Challenge, Global Scale-Up Program, ClimateLaunchPad, Yes!Delft, EIT Health, SpringBoard, Pole Position, Re-Move, Faculty of Impact, and EIT Raw Materials.
